Moya battles through to a win

The third seeded veteran Spaniard, a five-time champion in Croatia, broke at 5-5 in the third set and then closed out the second round match 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-5.

The 31-year-old Moya will face seventh seed Fabio Fognini in Thursday's quarter-finals after the Italian held off compatriot Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-4.

World number 27 Moya has yet to win a tournament this year after losing to Nicolas Almagro in the final at Costa Do Sauipe in February.

Top seed Fernando Verdasco, also of Spain, had little trouble reaching the last eight after dispatching France's Mathieu Montcourt 7-6 (7/5) 6-1.

The Madrid native, making his Umag debut, converted six of 12 break points while losing his serve four times and double-faulting on seven occasions in the one hour and 28 minute match.

In the quarter-finals, Verdasco will take on Mischa Zverev after the unseeded German upset eighth seed Marcos Daniel of Brazil 6-4 6-2.
