Clubs urge Mosley to quit
Mosley's refusal to resign, or even accept a compromise agreement, in the wake of lurid allegations about his private life has amazed senior figures within the motoring organisations.
That has resulted in a letter being sent to Mosley imploring him to step down ahead of next Tuesday's confidence vote in Paris to spare the governing body further embarrassment and damage.
A section of the letter reads: "We strongly believe that the only respectable way forward for the FIA, and for yourself, is to have an orderly transition, with an immediate agreement and your commitment to step down.
"The FIA is in a critical situation. Its image, reputation and credibility are being severely eroded.
"Every additional day that this situation persists, the damage increases. There is no way back."
The letter is signed by representatives from America (AAA and AATA), Austria (OEMTC), Belgium (TCB), Brazil (CCB), Canada (CAA), Denmark (FDM), Finland, (AL), France (FFA), Germany (ADAC), Hungary (MAK), India (FIAA), Israel (MEMSI), Japan (JAF), Singapore (AAS), Spain (RACC and RACE), Sweden (M), Switzerland (TCS) and the Netherlands (KNAC).
The clubs have also expressed their anger at Mosley for refusing the offer of a compromise deal to step down in November in exchange for a guaranteed victory in next week's vote.
The suggestion was proposed by the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism (WCAMT), a senior body of the FIA.
The letter added: "We deeply regret your refusal to accept the proposal by the members of WCAMT to reach an agreement for you to step down at the General Assembly in the coming month of November.
"This is a constructive effort to facilitate an orderly transition within the FIA and to find a solution to the present crisis.
"Instead, your intention to remain until the end of your term in 2009, in spite of the severe damage being inflicted to the FIA, could imply putting personal considerations before the interests of the FIA and its member clubs."
To further undermine Mosley, the clubs do not accept his assertion the FIA is at war with commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone with regard to the future of Formula One.
Mosley put forward the claim, amongst others, as to why he should continue, only for Ecclestone to issue a rebuttal, and pointedly state the FIA should be led by "a respected president".

Jayasuriya selected on merit
The veteran opener was not picked in the initial group identified by the selectors but was added at the expense of Upul Tharanga after the intervention of Sri Lanka's sports minister Gamini Lokuge earlier this month.
De Mel said the decision to include Jayasuriya, who will be 39 in June, was unanimous.
"Sanath deserved to be included in the team after his recent comeback to form," said De Mel.
"Sanath scored a hundred on the day we selected the squad so we felt that as he was performing well at the moment and deserves to be included."
Sri Lanka's lack of competition for places at the top of the order and lack of emerging talent contributed to the decision.
"We felt that Jayasuriya has reached peak again and, even at his age, he is fit," added De Mel. "We should give him the chance again for the country to gain the upper hand.
"We had considered many options and also younger players but Jayasuriya is looking good and we felt he deserves a recall," De Mel said.
Older players have a role to play, added De Mel, but he insisted the selectors will look to the future and not stifle emerging talent.
"We also have to include the older players who are fit and doing well so that we can maintain our ranking in the world," he said.

Blake frustrated by loss
The American joined David Nalbandian in becoming a high-profile casualty on day five at Roland Garros as he lost 7-6 (7/2) 3-6 7-5 6-3 to the 19-year-old.
Blake, who looked in decent form in his first-round match against Rainer Schuttler, is yet to progress beyond the third round in the French capital.
And he felt he only had himself to blame against Gulbis, who is appearing for only the second time in the Paris grand slam.
"I played the way too many commentators think I should be playing," said the 28-year-old.
"I didn't make too many errors and I didn't hit that many winners - that's the way a lot of them think I should play.
"Here is a good indication that that's not the way to win matches for me. There are a lot of guys out there that can dictate play against me if I try to play like that.
"It's really frustrating for me to play a match like that when I know my game. I was just a little too passive."
Gulbis will next play Nicolas Lapentti, who beat American Bobby Reynolds in four sets on Court Seven.
Argentina's Nalbandian, the sixth seed, let slip a two-set lead to go down to world number 145 Jeremy Chardy.
The French wildcard won 3-6 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-2, although Nalbandian - a two-time semi-finalist here - appeared to be moving gingerly towards the end of a match that lasted over three hours.
Nalbandian, who was a break up early in the final set, later admitted a muscle problem had hindered his movement.

Haydos pulls out
The 36-year-old opener did not even attempt to pass a fitness test in the lead up to that match after struggling to run in the three weeks leading up to the match.
It had been hoped he would shrug off the complaint in time for the commencement of the second Test in Antigua on Friday. However, such is the extent of the injury he has been forced to withdraw from the remainder of the three-Test and five one-day international tour.
"Matthew Hayden's right Achilles tendon injury has not made sufficient progress during his time in the West Indies and as such he will not be able to participate in the second Test and was highly unlikely to be available for the third Test," Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.
"With the large volume of cricket to be played over the next 18 months it was decided he should return to Australia to undergo rehabilitation and consult specialists.
"This means he will not be available for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies."

England taught us a lesson
The New Zealanders failed to press home their advantage in the second npower Test after opening up a 179-run first-innings lead, and subsequently trail 1-0 in the series when they should be in front.
One of England's great comebacks saw the tourists dismissed for only 114 second time around and a Manchester Test record 294-run chase was completed with four sessions to spare on Monday.
"They taught us a really good batting lesson on how to bat in difficult conditions under pressure," said Bracewell. "And to win.
"They're better players than we are now in terms of the batting line-up. We've got to take every opportunity and if we get half a sniff we've got to make it count.
"Young teams make those mistakes, poor teams keep repeating them."
Two of the young collective, Daniel Flynn and Jamie How, came out of the match with damage to their bodies, while New Zealand were today given news of a further blow from back home with Jesse Ryder not fit for the forthcoming NatWest Series.
The pain would have been greater this morning as the team reflected on the self-inflicted blows to their chances of snatching victory.
Jacob Oram and captain Daniel Vettori were both needlessly run out in the same over during the first innings and, forced to reshuffle the batting order due to the absence of Flynn and neck injury to Oram on Sunday, they went down in a blaze of shots against left-arm spinner Monty Panesar.
"We lost a half-session and lost the match," bemoaned Bracewell. "Probably 290 could have been enough but we should have got 400, we should have buried them.
"We look back and say we should have got 400 in the first innings as well when the pitch was at its best.
"We made two really bad mistakes with run-outs, they were poor mistakes when we were on top of them."
England's decision to employ the heavy roller before embarking on their fourth-day pursuit was also crucial.
As well as negating the fizz in the surface, it forced the Kiwi attack into unfamiliar roles.
"The wicket wasn't doing as much for us and so we searched a little bit and that's not our strength," admitted captain Vettori. "Our strength is to bowl maidens, build pressure and see what happens."
Flynn was due to have two teeth removed and replaced today after his smack in the mouth from a James Anderson delivery.
The 23-year-old wanted to bat in both innings but was held back by the team management and will resume on-field activity after the cosmetic surgery, a doctor's all-clear permitting.
"We are quite protective of him," Vettori said. "He hasn't been in a great space the last few days.
"Batting was not a good idea, so we wouldn't have forced the issue (if the game had gone longer).
"If the medical people clear him it will be a great idea for him to get straight back into it."
That chance will come in a three-day match against Northamptonshire starting on Friday - if Flynn is not cleared then Vettori will feature as a specialist batsman.
New Zealand's selection options have been depleted with the news opener How fractured his index finger in fielding practice early in the Test.
Although he has been pencilled in to feature in next week's npower series finale at Trent Bridge, he will be nursed through until the end of the one-day campaign.
"It's broken and he's just got to deal with it," said Bracewell. "It won't really heal until the end of the tour and we're just protecting it as much as we can."
The Black Caps have already lost the hard-hitting Ryder for the limited-overs leg of the tour after he failed to recover quickly enough from hand surgery.
Ryder was one of the successes of the winter, averaging 49 in New Zealand's 3-1 limited-overs win over England.
"He entertained extremely well but we've got to continue to create depth," Bracewell said. "It's another opportunity for somebody else - we know that Jesse can play and we've just got to be patient with that.

Queiroz hits out in Ronaldo row
The Portuguese coach draws a bizarre comparison between the player and Christopher Columbus.
Real Madrid have made no secret of their desire to recruit Ronaldo, prompting United to consider reporting them to FIFA.
But Queiroz feels Madrid's outspoken courting of his Portuguese compatriot is about more than their wish to snap up the gifted winger, claiming it is part of the long history and rivalry between Portugal and Spain.
"Cristiano Ronaldo will never be Spanish! As they will never take Olivenca again," he told Portuguese newspaper Jornal do Noticias, referring to the small town on the disputed border between the two countries.
Queiroz also delved further into the historic rivalry, alluding to explorer Christopher Columbus - who both countries claim as theirs - and the 60-year Philippine Dynasty when Portugal was ruled by three Spanish kings until the bloodless revolution of 1640.
"They already did the same with Christopher Columbus, and it now seems they want to naturalise Cristiano Ronaldo," added the United number two.
"Have they already forgotten what we did to them in the past? We will never lose our patience."
With Portugal preparing for Euro 2008, Queiroz knows the furore surrounding Ronaldo's future could not have come at a worse time.
"It's being done in a manner to distract the Portugal team, at the height of their preparations for the European Championships," he said.

Madrid have no morals
Barely had the champagne been uncorked after Manchester United's momentous Champions League final triumph over Chelsea than Ronaldo's Old Trafford future was thrown into question.
The 23-year-old candidate for world footballer of the year has hardly helped with a series of ambigious statements, which seemed to be aimed at increasing his salary despite only agreeing a new five-year contract last summer.
Real have wasted little time in making their interest known in a player coach Bernd Schuster would love to have at the Bernabeu.
Both Schuster and club president Ramon Calderon have expressed their admiration for the Portugal winger, which has only served to increase Ferguson's annoyance.
"They think they can ride roughshod over everyone but they won't do it with us," declared the Scot.
"Real Madrid have no moral issues at all.
"In terms of great clubs, Barcelona have far better morality than Real Madrid will ever have.
"Do you not think we have had many expressions of interest about our players from big clubs in Europe?
"Real Madrid are not the only club interested in Ronaldo. But the others are not saying so. They don't get into this nonsense."
Ferguson has found particularly ironic a statement from Calderon effectively alleging Ronaldo is remaining at United against his will.
Given General Franco's 40-year dictatorship was often to the benefit of Real in their battles with Catalan giants Barcelona, it is a comment the Manchester United manager is happy to submerge in sarcasm.
"I read on Teletext last night; Calderon is talking, Schuster is talking," he said.
"Calderon makes that great statement 'Slavery was abolished many years ago'. Did they tell Franco that? Give me a break.
"The simple fact is Cristiano has another four years left on his contract."
However, it does not appear the Spanish giants will abandon their attempt to lure Ronaldo to La Liga.
After all, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo's good friend Gabriel Heinze have all joined Real from United in recent years.
In Heinze's case it was a deal that suited United totally given the player's oft-stated desire to join Liverpool.
Beckham and Van Nistelrooy were apparently in their prime when they left Old Trafford though, a fact not lost on observers who feel Madeira-born Ronaldo will eventually find the lure of Spain too great to resist.
Yet Ferguson is happy to point out both Beckham and Van Nistelrooy had reached the end of their usefulness for the Red Devils, who do not let players go who they want to keep.

ERIKKSON AWAITS FATE
The Swede's future as manager has been the subject of intense speculation since it emerged City owner Thaksin Shinawatra was conducting a review of the club.
Former England boss Eriksson has declined to comment on the situation throughout the promotional tour of Asia, which included a 3-1 loss to Thailand Premier All-Stars in Bangkok and Thursday night's 3-1 defeat to a South China Invitational XI in Hong Kong - a game which could prove to be his last in charge.
The first of those losses was played out in front of Thaksin, with the dire display expected to deepen the former Thai prime minister's ire after an elaborate attempt to provoke the Thai public to adopt the Blues as their Barclays Premier League team.
Eriksson, however, focused on a summer holiday following a gruelling first season as a Premier League manager despite the imminent completion of Thaksin's dossier.
"It has been a very, very long season for all of us, especially for a lot of young players and a lot of new players in the Premier League," he said.
"I think everybody looks forward to a break now."
The 60-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract at Eastlands, led City to a ninth-placed finish - their best campaign for three seasons - and secured an UEFA Cup spot via the Fair Play League, an achievement which could yet earn him a reprieve from Thaksin.
And Eriksson insists the future is bright at Eastlands after giving five of the FA Youth Cup-winning side their first tastes of first-team football on tour.

Sylvinho top stay on
Barca sporting director Txiki Begiristain confirmed on Monday that there would be plenty of changes to the playing squad, who will be under the guidance of Pep Guardiola next season following the departure of coach Frank Rijkaard.
A number of Barca's players are already being linked with new clubs, but Sylvinho is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be offered a new contract that will enable him to stay with the Catalan giants next season.
"I really want to remain here, the truth is that I am comfortable in the city, I feel connected to the club and as well as that I have all my family here," said the Brazil international, who has been at Barca since 2004.
"If I stay here, Barca would be the team where I will have spent most time, and for me that would be a very important fact in my life."
If he does continue at the Nou Camp then the former Arsenal, Celta Vigo and Corinthians player will have a new coach to impress with Guardiola being promoted from Barca's reserve team.
Guardiola, the former team captain, is a hero at the club and Sylvinho is pleased for the man, who at 37 is only three years older than the Brazilian.
"It is good that Pep is coming, the people like him and he is doing an incredible job with Barca B," Sylvinho said on Barca TV.

Rossi at the top of the standings
The Fiat Yamaha rider led home team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who rode heroically to claim the second podium spot despite racing with fractured ankles - the legacy of a practice accident in Shanghai two weeks ago.
James Toseland failed to bring his Tech 3 Yamaha home after crashing out early in the race but the Briton's team-mate Colin Edwards put in a sterling ride to take third.
The win moves seven-time world champion Rossi onto 97 points, three clear of Lorenzo and Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, who are tied for second place.
After qualifying fourth on the grid, Rossi was sluggish off the line and dropped to sixth on the first pass through turn one but he quickly set to work passing those ahead of him.

Andre Nel to IPL
The 30-year-old fast bowler was scheduled to make his last appearance in Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy game against Middlesex Crusaders but East confirmed that Nel has been released following their 106-run defeat to Kent.
Nel, who may return to England later in the summer with the touring South Africans, is available to play for Mumbai Indians in the lucrative Twenty20 tournament on Sunday.
East confirmed that Nel, who appeared in three LV County Championship and three Friends Provident Trophy matches for Essex, left on good terms.
"The club has given its full backing to Andre with his request to leave after the Kent game on Friday," East told www.essexcricket.org.uk.
"It is an honour for Essex to have players in their ranks who are attracting the attention of those teams competing in the Indian Premier League.
"We thank Andre for all his efforts during this latest stint with the county.
"Once again he has proved a very popular member of our dressing room and has played his part in the team's excellent start to the campaign."

Team may be disbanded
Key Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho has voiced his concern that the Blues may be disbanded over the summer.
Carvalho, who was bought from FC Porto, also stated that he was unsure of his own future. Real Madrid and Inter Milan are reportedly interested in his services.
“You have to be prepared for the team to disperse, because when it's like that, someone goes, someone stays, someone comes. I don't know yet whether I'll stay, but I have a contract,” said Carvalho.
Despite not being drawn on his immediate future, he insisted he liked life in London with the Blues.
“I don't know what will happen, but it's good here. Everyone has known each other for a long time and we enjoy each others' company.”
Avram Grant has done well ever since he took over from Jose Mourinho, but Chelsea undoubtedly remain the latter's team.
The ‘Special One’ brought the current crop of players together, and many of them remain loyal to the Portugese manager.

Mishra hat trick
Chasing the hosts' total of 194 for four the Chargers needed 15 runs from the final over, but Mishra struck with the first three balls of the final over to dash the Chargers' hopes.
Mishra finished with match-winning figures of five for 17.
The Daredevils began the game in desperate need of a win after slumping to four consecutive defeats, which had seen them drop from the top of the Indian Premier League table to outside the top four.
After being sent in to bat the hosts lost Virender Sehwag without scoring in the opening over before Gautam Gambhir (79) and Shikhar Dhawan (68 not out) combined for a stand of 133 from 85 balls to form the backbone of the home side's total.

Ibra will play
The Sweden international trained with the rest of his team-mates on Tuesday having shaken off a knee injury which saw him miss Inter's last six league games.
The Nerazzurri will be desperate to return to winning ways after a defeat in the Milan derby coupled with last Sunday's surprise 2-2 draw against Siena saw their lead at the top of the Serie A standings cut to just one point.
The return of Ibrahimovic will be a blessing for coach Roberto Mancini, who knows that anything but a win at the Ennio Tardini stadium could see defending champions Inter hand the Scudetto to second-placed Roma.
